Turf Care's Take on Family Golf... It's Really Wild! |
As the Turf Care Maintenance Team begins preparing the golf course for a busy season, we are excited to join forces with the golf staff in renewing our focus on family golf.
Some of the greatest time spent with family is time spent outdoors. From our perspective, true fulfillment in golf is directly related to quality time spent outside! As a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary since 1993, Cantigny Golf extends that sanctuary to our most valued constituent... the golfer! From the moment you step onto the golf course, everything exudes components of nature. Even the names of our three nines proclaim their intent to take you on a journey through the Woodside, Lakeside and Hillside sanctuaries.
When families play Cantigny, they have a good chance of seeing Great Blue Herons and Egrets that benefit from our fish stocking program and diversity of habitat. Perhaps you’ll see Eastern Bluebirds, Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows and Purple Martins flying around our 70-plus bird boxes and our two Purple Martin hotels. When playing #3 Woodside you'll see what we affectionately refer to as our "Frog Pond." As you stroll past this pond the Bull Frogs will surprise you with a leap and a loud chirp as they dive in the pond. Keep an eye out as well for the Mallard ducks or Wood Ducks that may be residing in several of our duck boxes. While playing #9 Woodside, glance over at our six Honey Bee hives that are part of the United States Department of Agriculture's "Bee Informed Project," which helps ensure the future survival of our nation's Honey Bees. The Red Tail Hawks and Great Horned Owls make frequent visits due to the large prairie restoration areas and wildlife enhancement areas. Those taking advantage of the early tee times may even witness one of our "Wile E. Coyotes" or Wild Turkeys!
The smell of fresh cut grass, the sounds of birds chirping all around, and the breathtaking sights that Cantigny Golf displays can provide a fantastic family experience. Come play a round on the WILD SIDE here with the whole family. You never know what you'll encounter!

Family Course Program: Something for Everyone
As part of our re-commitment to family golf and introducing new players to the game, Cantigny is proud to introduce the Family Course Program. This program, sponsored by US Kids Golf and supported by the PGA of America, provides two additional teeing options to match varying skill levels. It also provides the perfect transition for junior golfers who are out-growing the Youth Links.
The Family Course is a perfect tie-in to the "Tee it Forward" campaign supported by the PGA and USGA. This initiative encourages golfers to play from the tees that match their abilities. What's the best way to tell which tees to hit from? On a typical par 4, the average PGA Tour player hits an 8-iron into the green on their second (approach) shot. The "Tee it Forward" campaign suggests you do the same: hit from the tees that offer you a short-to-middle iron into the greens on your approach shots (see diagram to right). Several golfers at Cantigny are trying this program (i.e. moving from blue to white tees) and loving the newfound enjoyment they are experiencing simply by shifting their perspective.
Family tees will be installed in May on the Woodside, Lakeside and Hillside nines and will be one of highlighted programs introduced at Family Golf Weekend, June 8-10.
