New Year's Resolution: Get Golf Fit for 2012

It's New Year's resolution time again and you should be making your goals for 2012. Maybe you're thinking about losing some extra poundage that you added by eating all those goodies during the holidays. Or, maybe you've dropped some distance in your game the past few seasons and you want to get stronger and a bit more flexible to get that yardage back.

In the past, far too many golfers put fitness at the bottom of the list for what they believed would help their game the most. Buying a new club, taking a lesson or two and hitting more golf balls on the range were typically much higher on the list of actions that they could take to enhance their performance. But, as important as good equipment, professional instruction and skills development through regular practice are to consistent golf improvement, the 'most important' piece of golf equipment that you can't buy in any store ... is your body!

Every time I hold a workshop here at the Cantigny Golf Academy the golfers who attend are looking for the same thing. They are tired of doing the same things over and over with their game and seeing the same, inconsistent results. They are starting to feel their bodies getting weaker and less flexible over the years, they don't feel balanced in their swing, and they are even starting to notice more aches and pains in their spine, shoulders, hips and knees. Bottom line, they are frustrated about playing golf a levels that are far below what they feel they are capable of and they want to find a real solution.

The 'good news' is that golf-specific fitness has gained much publicity over the past 5-10 years due to top PGA Tour players adding this essential element to their total performance strategy. Virtually every touring professional these days includes some element of customized, golf fitness training to help their posture, balance, flexibility and strength. And, because of what the pros are now doing, hundreds of thousands of amateur golfers, from beginners to experienced seniors, have started to add golf fitness to their game.

Fitness for golf is really becoming the norm for golfers who desire a better swing with more flexibility, balance and power. I am now working with many junior golfers who want to do well in high school and go on to have a chance at a Division-1 college scholarship. My clients also include senior golfers who want to get in the best shape possible to hit the ball farther, more consistently and with less stress in their body to avoid the nagging back, neck, shoulder or elbow injuries that have plagued them in the past.

So, whatever your goals are for the 2012 golf season and beyond, I know you probably want more out of your game. This off-season, why not add a golf-specific, customized golf fitness training program to your total golf performance plan? You will feel much better, your expensive golf equipment will work better, you will get more out of your lessons and, when you practice or play, you will experience faster results!
